Over 65,000 file self-assessment on first day

Nearly 66,500 workers filed their 2021/22 tax return on the first day of the new tax year on 6 April.

HMRC has said that there has been an increasing number of people who file their completed returns on the first day of the tax year in recent years. Almost 30,000 more people filed their return on 6 April of this year when compared to 2018.

People are being encouraged to file their returns as soon as possible instead of waiting until the very last minute on the 31 January deadline.

By filing your self-assessment return early you could benefit from receiving a tax refund on any overpaid tax sooner and the advantages of a budget payment plan with HMRC to make the process more affordable.

HMRC has updated its guidance for filing your self-assessment return, which can be found on the gov.uk website.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC director general for customer services, said:

"You don't need to wait for the January rush to send us your tax return. More and more people are getting theirs out of the way early - search self-assessment on gov.uk to get started."
